Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) are a category of wireless networks that are self-organized, robust and which offer more flexible client coverage with less equipment requirements than wired networks. ...In WMNs, mesh routers constitute the network’s “backbone”. The distributed, ever-changing and ad-hoc nature of these networks poses new challenges in configuration management. In order to face them, we modelize the configuration and semantics of a preexisting mesh router using the CIM model and OWL ontology language and implementing XSLT transformations from the original configuration format to CIM/OWL and back. We thus represent it in a higher level of abstraction, an ontological representation that supports configuration semantic checking, policy enforcing and reasoning on the configuration of WMN nodes. We also use the capabilities of our AdCIM framework for persistence and the generation of web configuration interfaces.

Multiple wireless hubs on a wireless network-on-chip (WNoC) share a single channel for simple implementation and to keep the overhead low. The traditional timer-based token passing mechanism that is ...responsible for channel allocation to hubs, treats all the packets taking the wireless path equally. However, the critical packets can stall the execution of applications or increase memory access time if not served with priority. The timer based approach also assigns the channel to each of the wireless hubs for a fixed time slot. This results in degraded system performance and inefficient wireless resource utilization. In this work, we propose RCAS, a Ranking based Channel Allocation Scheme that assigns the channel to the wireless hubs according to their rank. The critical nature of load along with total load size at each wireless hub decides its position in the ranking table. This enables the system to best utilize the wireless medium by reducing the channel idle time while keeping the network quality-of-service (QoS) in priority. Evaluation of the proposed scheme shows an average improvement of 9.5% in wireless medium utilization and an average reduction of 33.2% in critical load delay in comparison to a traditional timer-based approach.
We present in this paper a complete gestural interface built to support music pedagogy. The development of this prototype concerned both hardware and software components: a small wireless sensor ...interface including accelerometers and gyroscopes, and an analysis system enabling gesture following and recognition. A first set of experiments was conducted with teenagers in a music theory class. The preliminary results were encouraging concerning the suitability of these developments in music education.
This paper presents a low cost, light-weight, and low power consuming wireless neural interface for multichannel neural recording and optogenetic neuromodulation with 470 and 589 nm light sources and ...a customizable pulse generator. To enhance the light coupling efficiency between the light emitting diode (LED) and 4 x 4 array of optical fibers, microlens array is used. Measured light intensity at the tip of the fiber array is 2.812 and 1.765 mW/mm 2 for 470 and 589 nm light sources, respectively. Optical fibers are assembled with 4 x 4 microlens array on a silicon die, which enables the illumination of relatively large area in the brain. To record the neural signal, two zero-drift operational amplifiers and 12-bit ADC (analog-to-digital converter) were used. The sampling frequency on each channel is 16 kHz. A ± 160 μV, 100 Hz sine wave in saline solution was successfully measured and wirelessly transmitted with the fabricated device.
Significant milestones in the way to transform 4G LTE to 5G NR are analyzed. It is shown that a number of the important tasks can be successfully implemented by a millimeter-wave photonic approach to ...design network and terminal radio equipment. Using off-the-shelf photonic computer-aided VPI Photonics Design Suite software tool, a detailed analysis of optical-frequency-comb-based fiber to millimeter-band wireless interface in actual base station for 5G pico-cell network of fiber-wireless architecture was carried out. The simulation experiments to study fiber transmission of 1.25-Gbit/s, 64-QAM signals in the bandwidth 37-43.5 GHz predict that the needed transmission quality is supported at a distance of optical cable between Central Office and Base Station up to 40 km, which is quite acceptable for an access network.
Relative to the impressive number of proposals addressing the multitude of challenges raised by IEEE 802.11-based wireless networks, few have known real implementation. In wireless networks, due ...especially to the unpredictable nature of the wireless channel, bridging theory and practice is far from trivial. In this paper, we advocate including prototyping in the design process of wireless protocols. The goal is to speed up the design process and to help validating novel solutions under real conditions. To this end, we introduce Prawn, a tool that allows rapid prototyping of wireless network protocols. The basic idea behind Prawn is to provide a set of basic building blocks that implement common functionalities needed by a wide range of wireless protocols (e.g., neighbor discovery, link quality assessment, message transmission and reception). Besides these ready-to-use blocks, Prawn also provides a standard API that allows protocol designers easy access to the Prawn primitives. Through a number of examples, we showcase Prawn as a simple, yet powerful tool for fast prototyping of wireless network protocols.

Endosymbiotic Computing entails attaching an RF-enabled micro-controller module (endomodule) to an appliance such that it appears as a networked device in the cyber world. It enables a smart phone to ...work as not only a universal remote control but also a surrogate GUI for inspecting the attributes of these appliances, without modifications to legacy circuits. To minimize the cost and resource requirements of the endomodules, we propose a generalized active message programming method that executes dynamically-loaded threaded code on-demand without requiring parsing.
The common functions, network services, transducer services, and Transducer Electronic Data Sheet (TEDS) formats for members of the IEEE 1451 family of standards to be interoperable in both network ...interface and transducer interface are provided. The common functions and characteristics that are to be performed by a network capable application processor (NCAP), which is a 1451 server, and all devices that implement the NCAP are defined. A set of network services that includes a set of commands and replies to access transducer data and TEDS data from the NCAP (1451 server) by the Internet of Things (IoT) applications (APPs) that are 1451 clients are also defined. Application programming interfaces (APIs) of network services are outlined to facilitate communications between the APPs (1451 clients) and NCAPs. Furthermore, the common functions and characteristics that are to be performed by a transducer interface module (TIM) and all devices that implement the TIM are discussed. A set of transducer services that includes a set of commands and replies to facilitate the setup and control of the TIM, as well as reading and writing the data used by the NCAP, are outlined. APIs of transducer services are also discussed to facilitate communications between the NCAPs and TIMs. Finally, the formats for a TEDS and methods to access the TEDS are specified, along with the common functions and characteristics that are to be performed by an APP and all devices that implement the APP.
