The purpose of this investigation was to test the predictive validity of the College Board (CB) standardized placement test and high school grade point average at a private higher education ...institution in the eastern region of Puerto Rico. This research study explored the relationship between the CB admission test results and the English grades achieved by students in their freshman year at the institution. The institution studied uses the CB scores as the most important admission criteria and as an indicator for student placement in the different English levels the institution has. This research employed a validity study, which is a type of research that relates to the correlational research method. This design explores and describes the degree of relation between two or more variables. This study examined the correlation between one or more independent variables or predictors and one dependent variable or criteria and determined the prediction validity of the selected predictors. The independent variables or predictors applied in this study were the high school and the standardized ESL Achievement Tests administered by the CB. The data analysis of this investigation led to the conclusion that the variable having the highest correlation with the students’ first year English grade was the CB’s ESL Aptitude Test. However, this correlation falls within the ranks of a low positive correlation result. This means that the CB’s ESL Aptitude Test does not represent a decisive factor when predicting and placing students in their different ESL courses. The researcher recommends other variables as possible predictors of academic success and level placement in ESL courses. Among the predictors of academic nature, the following might be considered: student’s percentile rank within their class, a special project or essay prepared by the students, a pre-basic English course where English skills are reinforced, and recommendations from high school teachers and counselors. Some non-academic predictors that might be considered are: scores of aptitude and personality tests, the socioeconomic status and demographic data of the students, and the level of education and type of employment of students’ parents.

WASHINGTON, May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, nearly 50 years to the day after the landmark Supreme Court decision that declared that all children, regardless of their race, were entitled to receive a ...quality education, U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu (D-La.) joined with other congressional and education leaders from across the country for a roundtable discussion entitled, "Fulfilling the Promise of Brown v. Board." The roundtable launches the national initiative, Eleanor & Brown, to commemorate both the 50th anniversary of the Brown decision and the human rights legacy of Eleanor Roosevelt-Seagraves. The initiative, created by the National Urban Alliance for Effective Education (NUA), the Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val-Kill (ERVK) and the College Board (CB), intends to build support for furthering equity in education and eliminating the achievement gap. Today's launch of the Eleanor & Brown initiative will be followed, in late summer 2004, by a daylong session that will be convened to bring together representatives from NUA and partner school districts to share their ongoing activities related to eliminating the achievement gap and pertinent to the themes of Eleanor & Brown. The representatives will also work together to formulate action plans for the coming school year. The initiative will culminate in a special event in Washington, D.C., in 2005 where the founders of the Eleanor & Brown initiative and participating school districts will share and celebrate their years' successes.
