    Background. Cloned and characterized tumour suppressor genes connected with inhereted predisposition for several cancer syndromes are reviewed. With the identification of genes involved in the ... initiation of hereditary cancers molecular genetic diagnosis has become a reality. Conclusions. The meaning of molecular genetic diagnosis is discussed from various points of view. The importance of presimptomatic diagnosis and ethical problems connected with DNAtesting are discussed.
