  • The effect of breast or formula feeding on the concentrations of trace elements in sera of young infants
Rossipal, Erich ; Krachler, Michael ; Mičetić-Turk, Dušanka
In the sera of 5 fully breast-fed infants (mean age: 3.5+-1.8 months) and in the sera 0f 6 infants (mean age: 3.1+-1.8 months) 8 to 14 days breast-fed and then fed follow up cow milk formulae 21 ... trace elements (Ba, Be, Bi, Ca, Cd, Co, Cs, Cu, La, Li, Hg, Mg, Mn, Mo, Pb, Rb, Sb, Sn Sr, TI, Zn)were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The same elements were determined in the sera of 20 healthy blood donors. Our results indicate that the trace element pattern in sera of infants fed breast milk andcow milk formulae differs significantly from that of healthy adults. Moreover, formula feeding has an impact on the serum trace element status of that infants compared to infants fed breast milk.
