    Journal Article, Book Review

Reviews the book The psychology of humor: An integrative approach by Rod A. Martin (see record 2006-21361-000). Critical and constructive research topics and trends in the psychology of humour are featured in this publication. Extensive and current references, an index for topics and authors, with Canadian sources for examining psychological issues of national importance (well-being, positive psychology, coping, illness, trauma, stress, mental and physical health, families, lifestyles, and work lives) are included. The book has a well-organised introduction with a review of human cognition, emotion, and social behaviour. Fundamental and historical conceptualizations, along with experiences representing types of humour are explained. Early psychoanalytical and superiority humour, as well as arousal, incongruity, and reversal theories provide a foundation for interpreting research on a cognitive psychology of humour, social psychology of humour, humour as cognitive play, and humour as social play. The book includes a psychobiology of humour and laughter, much evidence on animal play (presumed to be the origin of humour in humans), personality approaches to humour, and numerous scales for assessing sense of humour, which continue to dominate in Martin's own research orientation. The book is better suited for graduate student education as a research handbook or to promote humour research with numerous potential projects recommended. Other scholars would benefit from this extensive resource, as would practitioners in health care, for the numerous potential applications explored.
