The Ise sankei mandara (Ise Pilgrimage Mandalas) depict Ise s shrines and temples, the roads leading to them, and local attractions. While the three versions under investigation appear to be based on a common model, close study reveals slight differences in detail and emphasis. These variations provide clues to the struggle for power and authority among Ise's Buddhist temples and allow for discussion of such issues as patronage and meaning. More generally, these differences show that sankei mandara are not static, generic representations but, rather, historically specific paintings that articulate changing institutional claims in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
