Highlights • We applied single dose testosterone administration in a placebo-controlled design. • Avoidance of eye contact in SAD is related to the severity of social anxiety. • Testosterone enhanced the initial fixations to the eyes of angry faces in SAD. • The findings support and extend social dominance theories of testosterone. • The direct effects on a core characteristic of SAD could have clinical implications.
