In the last of our regional considerations of the isotope results, we reach the westernmost extent of the Lifeways project, crossing the Rhine into France and the region of Alsace (Fig. 8.1). The Alsatian landscape is framed by the upper course of the Rhine, whose valley is some 40 km at its widest (Lefranc 2007a, 11), and bounded by the Vosges mountains to the west, the Alps to the south, the Black Forest to the east, and to the north, the Rhine valley continues into Germany.
