    The repetitive and cyclical character of the farce plot is notorious: it is a prime example of the "mechanical" character of the genre that has led, on the one hand, to its contemptuous dismissal by much theatrical and literary criticism, and, on the other, to Bergson's adoption of the Feydeau farce as the exemplar of the mechanical as a source of laughter.
