In many ways Russian literature today operates differently from how it did in the Soviet Union. With the collapse of the latter, the literary field became much more open, which allowed a young generation of authors to unite and become organized. One prominent literary group formed by these young authors was Vavilon ('Babel'), who operated under a system of values that were different from those of the Soviet Union. Primarily the group worked according to the principles of innovation and inclusion. As Vavilon gained access to a means of literary production and began creating a new space in the literary field, the young authors introduced a new way of producing and writing literature. This article explores some of the reasons behind the young generation's desire to create a new space in the literary field and outlines some of the ways in which they are different from those who preceded them.
