The Medical Outcomes Study 36-item short form (SF-36) is widely used to compare the health-related quality of life of general and specific populations, estimate the burden of disease and examine the benefits of treatment interventions. Studies have shown that SF-36 is reliable and able to detect differences between groups defined by age and sex. However, few reports used repeated measures of the SF-36 in populations other than patients. Hopman et al assess mean changes in SF-36 scores over a 3-year period in men and women between the ages of 40 and 59 years at baseline.
