In 2002, the Swedish government institutes the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, endowing it with five million Swedish crowns, to further children's literature and children's rights around the world. Metcalf profiles children's books authors Christine Nostlinger and Maurice Sendak who are the first recipient of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award. She points out that both authors share significant characteristics and create groundbreaking works that become classics of children's literature.
