    ...one wonders whether Rassers' "division of the tribe into rival subgroups" really fits the situation in the village of Trunyan. Since the theories of this author are described in note 5, page 27, as "fascinating, yet erratic", their application to Balinese society would need at least some explanation. ...I wish to emphasize that, in spite of its relatively limited scope, this new survey of the Balinese dance is a beautiful book which many lovers of Indonesian art forms will read with great pleasure, not in the last place because of its marvellous illustrations. ...the middle level families entered the civil service "in the spirit of the entrepreneur who must first identify the name of the game and then play it to the greatest personal advantage" (p. 144). ...Graves demonstrates in a case study of the village of Kota Gedang how this system worked in reality.
