    This book has sought to interweave a history of what happened to women who participated in the War of Independence after 1962 with an examination of how these female veterans have constructed, mobilised or marginalised their memories of the anti-colonial conflict at different points across the same period. The study of both post-independence history and the place of memory within this history has in turn provided insights into how these women participated in or related to the language and practical tasks of state- and nation-building.
