Campylobacter spp. were detected - using culture, ELISA, PCR, and qPCR - among children (0–36months) with moderate to severe diarrhea in Northeastern Brazil. Our data showed that either the qPCR alone or PCR along with ELISA might be an alternative to culture to diagnose Campylobacter due to their enhanced sensitivity. •The microbiological culture showed 100% specificity and PPV in this study.•Besides its high specificity, the microbiological culture has a low sensitivity.•The ELISA showed a great sensitivity and specificity, but a low PPV.•The molecular methods exhibited positive sensitivity, specificity and PPVs.•The molecular methods were the most effective choice for the diagnosis in this study.
