Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung was a literary magazine, founded in Jena in 1785, propagating rationalism from the beginning, and its main goal was to review and present analysis of all contemporary literary output, from all areas of knowledge. The journal was founded by the publisher and patron of the play Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747-1822), philologist and philosopher Christian Gottfried Schütz (1747-1832), and the Weimar poet and prose writer Christian Martin Wieland (1733-1813). Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung was published in the years 1785-1803 in Jena, and then until 1849 in Halle. It was described as the most widespread and influential German-language review journal of the time. The most famous collaborators of the magazine included Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805), Immanuel Kant (1724-1804), Johann Gottlieb Fichte (1762-1814), Alexander Humboldt (1769-1859), etc. The main journal was supplemented with Allgemeine Repertorium der Literatur - a systematic universal bibliography in which the material was inventoried and orderly, and Revision der Literatur, which was aimed at extracting from the collected material the encyclopedic history of literature. In addition, there was a literary Intelligenzblatt, whose subject matter concerned news from the widely understood world of the scholar.
