    The essay highlights the reception of De Architectura between the Fifteenth and Sixteenth centuries, focusing on the exegetical contributions to the complicated Vitruvian text by humanists and artists. The authors illustrate three case studies that testify how the intrinsic complexity of the Vitruvian text and the stratification of humanistic interpretations led to significant innovations in the architectural practice of Renaissance artists.
