  • Obstacles and opurtunities for resolving evironmental health problems
    Eržen, Ivan
Obstacles which often hinder effective action for environmental health could be classified into five major groups: insufficient monitoring of environmental conditions, poor or nonexistent linkage ... between the institutions that monitor environmental conditions, widespread disregard for legal standards, polluters that cannot be identified and, adequate evaluation of environmental health hazards is not available. The very fact of recognizing such a problem is also the first step toward the solution. An organized and coordinated approach among politicians, experts and public is of utmost importance in planning a program to reduce or prevent of environmental pollution. Environmental problems cannot be solved by simple and generally valid formula; it is necessary to consider economical, political, cultural situation. However, an overall program for the improvement of environmental conditions must include some common basic elements. First, an overall survey of the existing conditions must be conducted. Second, priority tasks must be set and priority should be given to remediation of urgent ecological problems that can be solved relatively quickly and with limited resources. Third, it should be determined who will participate in the program. And fourth, program organizers should provide ongoing monitoring of each project.
