  • Katepsin D in rak dojke = Cathepsin D and breast cancer
    Strojan, Primož
Background. Aspartic proteinase cathepsin D is an ubiquitous lysosomal proteolytic enzyme. The potential role of cathepsin D as a prognostic factor of the disease in cancer patients is determined by ... its involvement in proteolytic processes leading to the invasion and metastazing of tumor cells. The paper gives the description of biochemical properties of the enzyme and ofits role in the cell as well as in the malignant tumors growth and metastasizing. The paper also provides a detailed review of the clinical studies dealing with the prognostic value of cathepsin D in breast cancer patients; a particular attention is paid to certain unresolved questions and dilammas as exposed in the so far published studies. Conclusions. Despite the viewpoint that high content of cathepsin D in the tissue of breast carcinoma may prognosticate lower survival of the patients, the knowledge on the cathepsin D gathered so far is not sufficently conclusive to make more detailed estimate of its prognostic vallue in this particular cancer type. Therefore, in every day clinical practice, cathepsin D is not included in the treatment plans of breast cancer patients.
