Background. The purpose of this study was to evaluate some characteristics of laboratory tests utilisation, daily used by general practitioners in diagnostic procedures. Methods. Laboratory test ... utilisation of 53 general practitioners, who cared mainly for adult population, was retrospective observed. Data were obtained in The Health Center Maribor and in The Local branch-office of Health insurance company for the period of two years, from January 1st 1997 till December 31st 1998. Results. Obtained data show 880,755 visits of patients and 1.078;794 laboratory points used by laboratory tests. The average number of patients on a general practitioner was 1854 +- 693. The average number of patients visits on a practitioner per year was 8309 +- 2941.Average utilisation of laboratory tests by practitioner was 10;177 +- 5003 points per year (median 9416), per patient 5.94 +- 2.6 (median 5.67) points, per patient visit 1.3 +- 0.66 (median 1.23) points. The utilisation oflaboratory tests is connected with number of patients per physician and withnumber of visits per physician per year (p < 0.01). Results show higher utilisation of laboratory tests by physicians who worked more then 10 years (p< 0.05) and by physicians who worked in the city practices (p < 0,05). Otherpotential influences on laboratory utilisation (high proportion of patients above 65 years and accessibility to laboratory) were not confirmed. Actually laboratory utilisation per physician per year is considerably higher then arranged standardised value for laboratory utilisation. Conclusions. Knowledge of this characteristics can be the basis to develop further strategies for the optimal clinical and economical utilisation of laboratory technology and to improve the work quality of general practitioner.
