  • Vpliv kisika na izločanje rastnih faktorjev žilnega endotelija in retinopatija nedonošenčkov = Regulation of vascular endothelial growth factors by oxygen and retinopathy of prematurity
    Burja, Silva, 1942-
Background: Retinopathy of prematurity with uncontrolled neovascularization isusually initiated by hypoxia. During the past four decades, researchers all over the world have elaborated numerous ... hypotheses on retinal cell secretion of substances triggering neovascularization as a response to defective oxygenation. At the same time they hypothesized on the clear association of hypoxia with the interruption of normal vascularization and its obliteration. Detected were vascular endothelial growth factors responsible for normal retinal vessel development. Some promotors and some inhibitors of vascular endothelial growth factor secretion were also detected. Angiogenesis in the retina of a premature infant is a complicated multistage process involving various factors. All that affects the balance between stimulation and inhibition of vascularization has not been elucidated. Method: A summary of the results of the newest studies regarding the etiopathogenesis of retinopathy of prematurity. Conclusion: The results of the newest studies regarding the etiopathogenesis of retinopathy of prematurity have contributed considerably to the clarification of the development of the disease. However the mechanisms leading to the interruption of normal retinal vascularization and to vasoobliteration have still not been elucidated. We are approaching themoment when the medical intervention allowing the prevention of premature retinopathy will be defined.
