Welwitschia mirabilis is one of the most unexpected botanical discoveries of the nineteenth century. The Austro-Slovene botanist Friederich Welwitsch (F. Velbič) spotted it for the first time in its ...natural habitat in the West African desert and it was named after him. Some of the ugly but long-lived Ćflowers of the desertĆ can be more than a couple of hundred years old but because of ruthless tourists the danger of extinctin is greater every year.
