    The paper surveys 3D modelling techniques in geographic information systems (GIS), and geometric and topological data processing oriented towards efficient visualizations of 3D geometric models. We ... are particularly interested into approaches supporting and improving transmission and visualization of archeological and geoscientific 3D data over the internet. Two main 3D data representation methods exist. One is the surface representation, based on the triangular or, rarely, more general polygonal meshes, and the other is the volumetric representation or the volume graphics, using the volume elements or voxels. The stress is on 3D model simplification and compression techniques, also including original solutions developed by our group.
