  • The evaluation of RST Al-Fe-X alloy-precipitation
    Bizjak, Milan, 1955- ...
The formation of metastable phases and their transformation during thermal treatments were the main objects of our study. In this work the continuous electrical resistivity measurement for ... qualitative analysis of the solid state transformation and microstructural coarsening of the ribbons was utilized. Electrical resistance measurements of about 20 cm long samples were performed using D.C. four probe apparatus with W contacts. Argon atmosphere was maintained during in situ measurements in a tube-furnace at heating rate of 5°C/min. Al-Fe-X alloys investigations with optical and TEM discovered the existence of two zones. The zone A is consisted of very fine cellular structure that gradually changes to a coarsen cellular structure (zone B). In order to examine the thermal stability of the microstructure, electrical resistivity of rapidly solidified alloys was carried out during heat treatment. Electrical resistivity curvalue has two peaks in the temperature range between 298 and 873K. Temperature derivatives show this clearly. The laragest microstructural changes during heat treatment coincide with first and second negative peaks on the derived temperature vs. resistivity curve. Structural changes has not been observed aat the temperatures below first peak. Microstructural changes which are exposed by the first negative peak are very marked. The cellulat microstructure disappear quickly and complete microstructure is rearranged. At the end a needle like grain phases begin to form. The second peak presents the transformation of needle-shaped particles into the spherical particles. The correlation between DSC and DTA analysis and electrical resistivity is strong. The efficiency of the in situ electrical resistance method for the investigation of microstructural stability of RST alloys was established. This method enables development and preparation of new RST Al-Fe-X based alloys.
