In the field of multichannel signal processing activity index is a known and used measure, especially in biomedical signal processing. It stands for a global measure of signal source activity in ... multichannel mixtures. It was introduced as a part of the method for the decomposition of multichannel surface electromyographic signals. Later, its usage extended to the estimationof the number of sources in signal mixtures. Its properties, in particular influenced by the characteristics of sources, are well known, but the analysis of the influence of noise has not been studied in details yet. Therefore we propose a study that will answer the questions of activity index and white Gaussian noise added to the signal measurements. Detailed knowledge about the influence of noise on activity index is important because most of real signals are corrupted by noise. Considering the latest findings, it will be possible to build more robust models of activity index for the purpose of multichannel signal decomposition and the source number estimation.
