  • Detection of adsorption layers on DLC coatings [Elektronski vir]
Simič, Rok ; Kalin, Mitjan ; Hirayama, Tomoko
Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings are known for their very low friction and good anti-wear properties. Therefore, DLC coatings are being increasingly applied to many crucial parts of mechanical ... systems like piston rings, camshafts, sliders etc. In most cases such contacts are lubricated to enable satisfactory tribological performance of the non-coated metal parts as well as to help dissipate the excessive heat. To ensure the optimum performance of the sliding parts, the interaction of the lubricant with the contacting surfaces is of crucial importance. Since common lubricants used today are adapted to work best with metal contacts, the application of the DLC coatings into such systems may not manifest in the desired improvements. Therefore, tracking and tailoring of the interfacial interactions is needed for successful implementation of the DLC coatings in the existing systems.
