    Within the framework of preventative health check-ups of the employees of the Šoštanj Thermal Power Plant, analysis of biological material was performed forthose groups of employees with at least 10 ... years of service who had worked in a hazardous environment for over 50% of their total service period. The influences of hazardous substances were assessed: of fly ash, which contains heavy metals (affecting the tubular and glomerular function) and radon and itsdescendants (which together with heavy metals affect the genome), electromagnetic radiation (which affects the genome and EEG), noise, stress, presence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and the influence of the free and bound Si02 on the pulmonary tissue. It was found that the levels of heavy metals (with the exception of nickel) do not exceed the permissible levels, that the tubular and glomerular function are impaired in over a third of the employees, that the influence of stress and noise is not convincing on the basis of the monitored parameters, that the influence of radon, its descendants and heavy metals on changes in the genome is significant and that the influence of electromagnetic radiation on the genome and EEG is significant, that the values of PCB deviate only insignificantly in a smaller percentage of employees and that there is no convincing evidence of fibrogenicor carcinogenic effects of dust or asbestos dust.
