  • Water scale precipitation on heated surfaces : the effect of magnetic water treatment
    Može, Matic ...
This paper deals with the effect of magnetic water treatment (MWT) on calcium carbonate precipitation on submersible electric water heaters. Synthetic hard water was continuously pumped through two ... identical experimental setups one of which was equipped with a commercially available magnetic water treatment device. Each setup included one continuously operating heater and one interval heater. After 21 days of intermittent operation, the scale build-up on the heaters was examined using x-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy to determine the proportions of calcium carbonate polymorphs. It is shown that the magnetic water treatment had virtually no effect on the amount of each polymorph that precipitated on the heaters in both experimental setups. Slightly lower average amount of precipitate on the treated setup is attributed to the magnetic water treatment. Finally, the amount of scale on the interval heaters was lower, however, most likely due to the lower average power of the said heaters.
