  • Sustainable LCA-based MINLP synthesis of bioethanol processes

    This contribution presents a sustainable mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) synthesis of bioethanol processes from different raw materials, which include starch, sugar and lignocelluloses. A ... special normalized LCA index is defined and included in the multi-criteria optimisation in order to consider different Ćcradle-tograveĆ environmental impacts simultaneously with the synthesis of bioethanol processes. A two-level MINLP approach is performed where economically effective production of bioethanol from corn is considered in the first level, while, in the second level, the superstructure is expandedwith sustainable alternatives using also other raw materials and technologies and the model augmented for the LCA environmental and social criteria in order to generate a set of Pareto optimal solutions. A special social indicator for conversion of food-intended raw materials into energy is introduced in order to minimize the competition of the food and energy sectors. Different syntheses are performed under several scenarios employing the MINLP process synthesizer MIPSYN.
