  • The olm (Proteus anguinus), a flagship groundwater species [Elektronski vir]
    Kostanjšek, Rok ...
This chapter highlights the problem of general lack of charismatic species in groundwater conservation and demonstrates how the olm (Proteus anguinus) historically and spontaneously took over the ... role as one of the flagship species for European groundwater habitats. We show how this recognition has happened gradually and naturally in an unplanned fashion, developing hand-in-hand with the growth of subterranean biology. Therefore, we can regard P. anguinus as an ambassador not only for the conservation of cave life but also for subterranean biology and the scientific study and protection of groundwater. Further, we review the most important and newest research on systematics, evolution, sensory systems, developmental biology, conservation, and ecology of this extraordinary amphibian, with the aim to encourage the use of this and other subterranean salamanders as much needed groundwater flagships.
