    Electrical properties of materials such as semiconductors an solid ion conductors are determined by interfacial properties wich are usually significantly different from those of the bulk material. ... The boundary separets individual grains in polycrystalline materials or the bulk of two neighbouring phases, e.g. a metal electrode and an ionic crystal or semiconductor. A special type of inter facial region is the boundary between three phases (electrode/electrolyte/gas) wich plays an important role in solidoxide fuel cells. For example, both the electrochemical reaction of oxidation of fuel and reduction of oxidant takes place at the corresponding 3-phase boundary. Understanding the kinetics of reaction is necessary for fuelcell optimization and new materials.
