The objective of this work is to investigate the stability behaviour of longitudinally stiffened, transversally curved steel plates under compressive stresses and to propose design guidelines that ... extend the scope of the current European standards for plated structures. The behaviour of stiffened curved plates is a complex problem, especially due to the interaction of curvature, relative stiffness of the stiffeners and initial imperfections. The experimental and finite element investigations presented in this thesis aim to explain the behaviour of such structures and to demonstrate the advantages that can be obtained from bridge decks with curved panels. Nine large-scale experimental tests were performed on longitudinally and transversally stiffened plates made of high strength steel, namely S500 and S700. They were subjected to compressive stresses up to collapse. The nine specimens consisted of flat and curved plates, which differed in the material grade and the geometric parameters, such as plate thickness, aspect ratio, size and shape of the stiffeners. The effects of various parameters on the resistance of the plate to pure compression are discussed. In addition, a numerical model based on the test panel geometry, the measured initial geometric imperfections and elasto-plastic material characteristics is presented. It is verified against the test results with regard to initial stiffness, ultimate resistance and failure mode and it demonstrates very good agreement. The numerical model is further used in an extensive parametric study to investigate the effects of curvature, plate slenderness, size and shape of the stiffeners on the ultimate resistance of the stiffened curved plates. From the results, some important conclusions are drawn regarding structural behaviour and the positive effects of curvature on cross-sectional resistance. A study on the influence of geometric imperfections on the ultimate load-carrying capacity is presented, which is based on the modification of node coordinates by means of sine-shape functions. Finally, design rules are proposed for longitudinally stiffened curved plates that are subjected to compressive stresses. The rules correspond to the formalism of EN 1993-1-5 for flat plated structures. The maximum loads obtained from experimental and numerical tests are compared with the new design rules and a good correlation is achieved.
