Objective: With screening tests children who need further diagnostic testing can be detected. We were interested in usefulness of evoked otoacoustic measurement as a screening test for hearing ... impairment. The prognosis for the hearing-impaired child is improved when the diagnosis is early and the intervention is immediate. Patients and methods: There were 110 infants with risk factors for hearing loss and 254 neonates who were in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, included in the study. In all of them the transient otoacoustic emissions (TOAE) were registered. The measurements were done by Celesta 503 and Echoport ILO 288. Results: TOAE was registered in 96 (87,3%) of infants atrisk and in 212 (83,5%) neonates. With further examinations there was sensorineural hearing impairment confirmed in 8 (7,3%) infants at risk and in one (0,4%) from the group of neonates. Conclusion: TOAE is a simple performed method. It does not show a hearing threshold but it can detect the malfunctionof the ear. Therefore it is a convenient screening method.
