  • Combined effect of the AW and the AM package additives on the coefficient of friction in the boundary lubrication regime [Elektronski vir]
    Simonović, Kosta ; Kalin, Mitjan
Contemporary automotive lubricants are composed out of many different additives [1] which inevitably influence the coefficient of friction in the boundary lubrication (BL) regime. In the BL regime, ... anti-wear (AW) additive is considered as a key -performance defining- additive and many research has been and still is devoted to the understanding of the nature of its interaction with the surface and consequently on its effect on the BL coefficient of friction[2]. On the other hand, AW additive reacts with all other additives [3-5] (i.e. antioxidants, dispersants, detergents, etc.) that are present in the commercial automotive lubricant and it turns out that it is difficult to assess AW additive without consideration of the full additive package % automotive (AM) package. Hence, in this work, we employ proven combination of the design of experiments (DOE) methodology and statistical analysis [6] to characterize combinatorial effect of the full AM package and the AW additive on the coefficient of friction of the two highly relevant automotive contacts: steel-steel and steel-DLC. Moreover, comparison of present results with the ones for the AW additive alone [7] shows the necessity of joint consideration of the AW additive and the AM package.
