Tribological properties of polyacetal (POM): the influence of contact configuration [Elektronski vir]Kupec, Alja ; Pogačnik, Aljaž, 1985- ; Kalin, MitjanThe time for which each contacting body is exposed to a tribological contact affects its interface temperature, third-body and tribofilm formation, and, as a result, the overall tribological ... behaviour, which may be particularly relevant with very dissimilar material pairs including plastic materials. Namely, as compared to a typical tribological materials, i.e. metals, plastic materials have much lower thermal conductivity as well service temperatures, meaning that a relatively small changes in temperatures may greatly influence tribological contact conditions. In this study, the influence of the material pairs configuration on tribological properties of polyacetal (POM) in self-mated contact (POM/POM) or against steel as a stationary (SS/POM) or as a moving (POM/SS) contact body has been examined using a pin on disc testing method. The effect of the nominal pressure (0.55 % 1.10 MPa) and sliding velocity (0.4 % 1 m/s) was studied at sliding distances sufficiently long to ensure steady-state sliding conditions. In addition, the contact conditions were carefully controlled with measurements of the upper specimen surface temperatures using an infrared camera. The results show that the tribological behaviour indeed depends significantly on the contact configuration and is closely related to the surface temperature increase due to tribological contact. The surface temperature of the polyacetal in a self mated contact (POM/POM) and of steel pin sliding against polyacetal disc (SS/POM) varied for 30 °C or even for as much as 90 °C in the studied pressure and velocity range, respectively. On the other hand, when polyacetal pin was sliding against steel disc (POM/SS), the surface temperature formed in the studied pressure and velocity ranges was quite stable, not exceeding 15 °C.
