  • Correlation between the analysis of electrochemical noise and simultaneous measurements of concrete surfaces

The ability of electrochemical noise to monitor and characterize certain dynamic corrosion processes has been investigated. Particular attention was paid to transitions from one type of corrosion to ... another. In the study correlation was observed between individual corrosion defects on the surface and the observed fluctuations of potential and current. The results of the analysis of the electrochemical noise indicated that the dimensionality of the phase space (the fractal dimension) and the dependence on initial conditions (the Lyapunov exponents) are related to the type of corrosion (degree of localization: from uniform corrosion, through local to extremely local corrosion). It was therefore concluded that chaotic analysis of measured electrochemical noise can determine the type of corrosion, and also provide some data about the physical picture of different corrosion processes. However, the results of the study have also opened up several new questions about limitations of the analysis of measured electrochemical noise and its physical mechanism
