In the last decade new quinolone antibiotics with better activity against penumococci were developed primarily for the treatment of respiratory tract infections. In Slovenia levofloxacin and ...moxifloxacin are on the market, gatifloxacin and gemifloxacin are available in addition in other parts of the world. Numerous studies proved their clinical efficacy, in some studies their efficacy is superior to the standard antibiotics for the same indications. Safety was confirmed in clinical studies and in postmarketing period. Pharmacokinetic properties allow easy administration and sequential treatment.In vitro results and some clinical data suggest relatively slow development of bacterial resistance against new quinolones. In a review article clinical pharmacology, efficacy and safety of levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, gatifloxacin and gemifloxacin are described.
