Backpround. The aim of the analysis was to evaluate the effect of the cervicalconization on the duration of pregnancies, preterm delivery, cerclage, mode of delivery and perinatal mortality. We have ... done two analysis. The first in Slovenia and the second in Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics in General Hospital Izola. Methods. A retrospective study was performed. We compared two groups of deliveries after conization and without conization. The source of data was National Perinatal Information Sistem (NPIS) of Slovenia from 1997 to1999. We have also done retrospective analysis of all delivery records in Maternity Izola from 1999 to 2003. Results. There were 53001 deliveries in Slovenia in the years i997-1999, among theme 522 (1,0%) after conization. It was impossible to find out what kind of operations- conizations were done. We discovered statisticaly significant morepreterm deliveries after conization 19,2% (No 100) vs. 5,6% (No 2943), shorter duration of gestation 37,9 weeks vs. 39,2 weeks, more elective cesarean sections 5,3% vs. 3,2%, more cesarean deliveries 14,4% vs. 9,6% and more cerclage 9,4% vs. 1,0%. We found no difference in perinatal mortality rate between the groups. There were 2827 deliveries in Izola Maternity in the years 1999 to 2003, among them 44 (1,6%) after conization. In 43 (97,7%) casesthe cold knife conization was done. We found statisticaly significant more preterm deliveries after conization 27,3% (No 12) vs. 4,4%( No 105). Conclusion. We confirmed our suspicion that conization increases the risk of preterm delivery in Slovenia and Izola.
