  • Mathematical model of industrial continuous polymerization of nylon-6
Plazl, Igor ; Koloini, Tine, 1940-2008
The mathematical model of the industrial continuous process polymerisation of ▫$[epsilon]-caprolactam into polyamid 6 (nylon-6) was developed. The model considers a kinetic solution of all reactions ... taking place in the process, namely ring-opening of caprolactam, polycondensation, polyaddition, ring opening of cyclic dimmers, polyaddition of cyclic dimmers and in this case the reaction with acetic acid. The analysis is based on the assumption of ideal mixing or plug flow in the top zone of the reactor and plug flow in the lower zones. The model also considers the temperature profile during polymerisation and the variation of residence times in the reactor due to the heating bodies placed inside the reactor. The mathematical model was tested on two industrial continuous reactors for various capacities and different temperature profiles. The results of numerical calculations are in all cases in very good agreement with the experimental data. The model allowed the understanding of the process of polymerisation process and for the design and control of the highly recommended prepolymerisation process. The model may be very useful for trining and education, and for process optimisation, as well.$▫
