  • Epitaxial growth of Au on SnTe and PbTe
    Mandrino, Djordje ; Marinković, Velibor
Epitaxial growth of thin Au deposits on (001) thin film epitaxial layers of SnTe and PbTe has been investigated by TEM and TED methods as a part of systematic studies of interfacial reactions in ... metal-semiconductor thin film couples. Au-SnTe or PbTe thin film specimens have been prepared by subsequent evaporation at <▫$10^{-6}$▫ mbar in the same vacuum cycle onto (001) KCl substrates. Thickness of SnTe of PbTe layers has been of the order of 30 nm, while Au deposits had nominal thicknesses of 1.3 and 10 nm, and have been deposited at 200, 250 and 280°C. At these conditions Au forms individual crystallites with various cross-sectional shapes. The following two epitaxial relationships have been observed: (110)Au▫$\parallel$▫(100)substrate;[001]Au▫$\parallel$▫[001]substrate (100)Au▫$\parallel$▫(100)substrate;[011]Au▫$\parallel$▫[001]substrate Additional (still unidentified) reflections and contrast changes observed in the substrate close to the deposit particles suggest that the epitaxial growth is accompanied by chemical reaction.
