  • People's estimation of their state of health in relation to frequency of their sports activity
    Sila, Boris
Optimal health and well - being from early years to late seniority becomes of great value tightly connected with people's awareness of the necessity of relevant physical activity. No matter whether ... for daily chores, hobbies, recreation or strictly for sports, adequate and systematic physical exercise play an important part in achieving and retaining good psychosomatic fitness. The survey investigates whether there is and what the relationship is between people's estimation of their state of health and their frequency of physical activity. The interviews were carried out by means of a questionnaire and opinion sample was selected regarding age and gender. The data was obtained in the framework of Slovenian Public Opinion Research conducted by The Research Centre of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ljubljana in November 2001. The sample included 10087 people over 18. The proportion of men was 46.7% and women 53.3%. The average age was 46.2 years. The relation between variables was examined using SPSS tools. Besides basic statistical parameters also contingency tables as well as Chi square were included while Coefficient contingency (Cc) was used to state the level of correlation's significance. The results show that not only the opinion of an individuals' actual state of health but also an awareness of the importance of taking care of one's health is associated to their pattern of physical activity. Among Slovenian people over 18 who have a better opinion of their state of health we found a greater number of those who report a higher rate of frequency of physical activity, than of those who are not satisfied with their health. This was identified equally for men and women and in all age groups. The picture is very similar when we look at taking care of one's health. The more people are active in sport the higher is the rate of their concern for maintaining good health. Encouraging as many people as possible to take part in various and organised sport recreational activities is one of the major ways to contribute to all positive components of good health in general and meet many of the nations health goals associated with a successful slowdown of the ageing process. Another important aim is to enable people of all age groups and especially for the elderly to improve and maintain their physical activity and contribute to the quality and fullness of their life.
