Saint Nazarius : father and ruler of Justinopolis : on the occasion of the 1500th anniversary of the foundation of the City of Koper
The booklet contains texts about St. Nazarius, father and ruler of Justinopolis, today's Koper, originating from the humanistic writings of Ferdinando Ughelli, "Italia sacra"; Nicolò Manzuoli, "New ... description of the province of Istria", and Francesco Semi, a historian from Koper, who highlighted the ark of St. Nazarius, a lesser-known artistic creation in the cathedral of Koper. Ughelli published his work "Italia sacra" in 1654, in which he writes that the relics of St. Nazarius were found by divine revelation in the church of Santa Maria and buried in the cathedral, where his stone coffin bears an inscription inviting protection of the homeland. In addition to his body, a lead plate with an inscription confirming his ascent to God and other historical evidence about him was found. Justinopolis is the first city of Istria, founded on a fortified site to protect its inhabitants from the raiders of Sclavonia, now known as Koper, with the cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Maggiore and a rich history that includes important figures like Pietro Paolo Vergerio the Elder and Girolamo Muzio. Manzuoli published in 1661 the "Life and works of the saints and blessed of Istria with the invention of their bodies" as the second volume attached to the "New description of the province of Istria", which is largely unknown because it is no longer included in facsimiles, and the Slovenes have obtained the translation only of the first part, the historical one. Furthermore, in the second volume, Manzuoli publishes the description of the miraculous finding of the Bones of St. Nazarius, the famous patron of the city of Koper, and the description of the miracles he performed in this city. The letters include the correspondence of Pileo di Marini, Archbishop of Genoa, and Giacomo di Languschi, commissioned to return the relics of St. Nazarius to his Homeland, on July 9, 1422. Francesco Semi noted in 1933 the artistic value of the marble ark of St. Nazarius, the work of the Venetian sculptor tajapiera Filippo de Sanctis from the 14th century, one of the most important artistic monuments of the city. The ark is richly decorated with sculptures depicting the saint, his blessing to the people, and the miracles that occurred after his death. With this booklet, we aim to offer our readers fascinating and still relatively obscure narratives about St. Nazarius, in order to dignify the celebration of our patron and commemorate the jubilee of the 1500 years since the foundation of the city of Koper, where he served as governor and servant in the spirit of Byzantine, holding the roles of ruler and bishop of Justinopolis, the settlement dedicated to Emperor Justin I the Great.
