    Bilban, Marjan
Occupational injuries are, apart from occupational diseases, the most significant negative indications of general health. Keeping track of occupational injuries is important for assessing the current ... situation of occupational health and safety and for planning preventive measures in order to improve the general health. Work injuries are a reliable source of information, because the occurrence of an injury is always connected to an event (accident) and the causality is not diffcult to establish. The need for relevant data is even more important today, when the labor market in the EU isopening, as occupational injuries are indicators of how much care and attention are put into occupational health and safety by individual EU members. Work injuries play a significant socioeconomic role in the society. They cause absence from work, less productivity, lost wagers, they increase health costs, increase the cost of professional rehabilitation, they can causedisablement or even loss of life. The consequences of a work injury can be severe for the individual, his family, his employer and the society. We have analyzed the data on all workers injured at work or on the way to or fromwork in the Republic of Slovenia in 2002; the employer had to report an occupational injury using the form ER-8 Report of Occupational injuries. The analysis presents 10 private industries with the most occupational injuries together with the causes of injuries, parts of the body injured, numbers of lost workdays and estimates of caused damage. The largest number of injuries was in the construction sector (4245). Manufacturing of metal products accounts for 2449 work injuries and the sector of public administration and defense accounts for 2053 work injuries. Injuries in construction, manufacturing of metal products and handling and remodeling wood caused most economic damage. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
