  • Validation of solution for people tracking and counting using WiFi network messages [Elektronski vir]
    Simončič, Aleš, 1997- ...
Solutions for monitoring individuals or groups in public spaces are important for security, traffic management, urban planning, crisis management, and event organization. In this work, we present a ... verification of a non-intrusive, privacy-preserving solution for detecting presence and movement patterns based on the network management messages sent by WiFi-enabled personal devices originally used to facilitate the association to available networks. Currently, MAC randomization techniques are used to comply with privacy regulations and prevent the easy differentiation of devices based on MAC addresses. To overcome this challenge, we apply an extended derandomization and clustering method that identifies individual devices by grouping similar network management messages and corresponding radio channel attributes via a clustering algorithm. The method was first calibrated on a labeled, publicly available dataset and validated for device clustering and counting using a dataset provided within the CONFRONT challenge.
