Adequate oral alimentation is not possible in all patients raising the danger of undernutrition. Help with intake of nutrients must be therefore provided tothem. If possible, enteral nutrition is ... preferred over parenteral since it is safer, simpler, more complete and more cost efficient. Food is instilled via tubes into the stomach or jejunum. For long term use gastrostomies and jejunostomies are used, allowing the patient to be fed at home. Most complications can be recognized and treated by primary care physicians. Indications, ways of insertion and possible acute and chronic complications are described as well as their treatment.
