In conditionally automated driving mode (SAE Level 3) vehicles are allowed to handle all driving tasks, while the driver must be ready to intervene when necessary. A key aspect in studying the ... transition from automated to manual driving is the stabilization time required after a take-over is performed. This study extends previous research by examining the impact of demographic diversity on post-takeover stabilization. We analyzed data from two studies using a driving simulator, involving 58 drivers aged 21-57, assessing variables like speed, deceleration, and physiological responses across the first 14 seconds following a takeover. Our findings indicate significant differences in stabilization times based on age, gender, driving experience, and simulator familiarity. Middle-aged drivers quickly reduce speed but accelerate again, while younger drivers maintain reduced speed. Male drivers decelerate sooner than females, and drivers with more simulator experience exhibit sharper deceleration initially. In conclusion, our study underscores the need for tailored approaches in the development and implementation of automated vehicles.
