  • Caries occurrence in rats after bleaching with 10% carbamide peroxide in vivo
Kraigher, Alja ; van der Veen, M.H. ; Potočnik, Igor, 1965-
Morphological changes in enamel have been demonstrated after the use of 10% carbamide bleaching agent. SEM studies have reported grooves, pits, erosions waviness, increased porosity, and increased ... roughness of the enamel surface (McGuckin et al., 1992; Hegedus et al., 1999). Human teeth exposed to 10% carbamide peroxide in vitro for 6h lost a relatively small amount (1 microg/mm2) of calcium (McCracken and Haywood, 1996), and the Ca/P ratio was decreased (Rotstein et al., 1996). In addition, subsurface oxidative effects of bleaching agents were demonstrated (Hegedus et al., 1999; Potočnik et al., 2000). Thus, acid diffusion into enamel, taking place at the microstructural level through the intercrystalline spaces and interprismatic spaces, could be enhanced in bleached namel. Significantly increased adhesion of the cariogenicbacteria Streptococcus mutans and S. sobrinus have been reported after 1 month (8h daily) of 10% carbamide peroxide gel application in vitro (Gurgan et al., 1997) and after treatment (35% hydrogen peroxide) of vital teeth (Hosoya et al., 2003). Interestingly, in the latter study, the number ofS. mutans colonies and enamel surface roughness were not correlated. It is reasonable to suggest that a higher permeability of bleached enamel and an increased number of cariogenic bacteria adhering to bleached enamel surface would promote caries formation. Therefore, the aim of the present study was toinvestigate the effect of bleaching with carbamide peroxide on caries formation in rat molars in vivo.
