Politeness in commercial correspondence : comparison of politeness elements in English and Slovene business letters : graduation thesis

Communication in the commercial world is of fundamental importance for a successful business. Every good businessman/woman has to be versed in all forms of commercial communication, especially ...written-ones, which is the most important element in order to perform business activities. Nowadays, business activity has exceeded local areas and is spreading across the globe, therefore it is important to be able to speak the English language as the global language of business and commerce. It is important that business people learn the proper way of writing of English letters and become aware of the intercultural differences of written correspondence among cultures. This graduation thesis presents the structure of English and Slovene commercial letters in more detail and examines politeness elements in commercial correspondence in both languages. The main theoretical framework used for the analysis of politeness elements is that of Brown and Levinson (1978). The concrete examples of different types of commercial correspondence illustrate the typical use of politeness elements in English and Slovene commercial letters and emails.
