Gonorrhea, sexually transmitted disease, is caused by bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae, which is a Gram negative diplococcus. Since 1997, in Slovenia theincidence has been stabilized below 5/100.000 ... inhabitants. Estimated prevalence of gonococcal infection in pregnancy depends on studied population and varies from 0,5 to 7,4 %. In Slovenia, the prevalence of gonococcai infections in pregnancy is not known, the screening has not been performed yet. Promiscous, younger and single pregnant women, living in lower socio-economic status are supposed to be at risk for infection. The newborn isinfected at birth, while passing through the birth canal. Infection, mostly ophtalmia neonatorum, arises in few days after birth, when non treated, it often prolongs to blindness. In microbiology diagnostic cultivation and isolation of N. gonorrhoeae is still the gold standard. Molecular methods are highly specific and sensitive. Proper collection and transport of sampes are essential. Routine application of 1% silver nitrate solution at birth is used as prophylaxis of infection in newborns. Antimicrobial resistance of Neisseriagonorrhoeae is becoming a global problem, so sistematic surveillance is needed in Slovenia, too.
