There are several known technologies and processes for desulfurization of hot metal used for the production of ductile iron. Variation of so continuous plug method is currently used in IMP Livar d.d. ... for cupola iron desulfurization. Addition of calcium carbide mixture is used for removal of sulfur from iron melt. Low calcium carbide yield, as a result of mechanical method of adding, is related to production costs, variations of sulfur content in melt and problems connected to slag disposal. Cold model investigations of applied desulfurization process in flow through ladle have been carried out. Reactions of desulfurization are controlled by liquid phase mass transfer between hot metal, calcium carbide particles and slag phase. In order to calculate the rate of those reactions, information about the phase mass transfer is necessary. The time of mass transfer, between calcium carbide particles and slag phase, was determined in a flow through ladle cold model. For model experiments polystyrene was used instead of calcium carbide. The density ration between water and polystyrene particles is the same as it in the case of calcium carbide and iron melt. The time of mass transfer was determined as a function of gas flow rate. Influence of porous plug position and method of particle injection on particle movement was estimated. An experiment was conducted to determine the optimum reaction zone position. Investigations showed that gas flow influence the reaction zone position. The zone in which the contact time between particle and the fluid was observed to be the longest, is so called reaction zone. Measured contact times, of water and added polystyrene particles, seemed to be to short for achieving higher desulfurization yields. Observations showed that at the critical gas flow rate part of a slag phase breaks into particles which are entrained into the water, resulting in a increase in the two phase interfacial area.
